Overview #7.Additional Materials: Incorporating Today's Technology | ![]() |
While we remain faithful to Dr. Montessori's methods and philosophy, we
recognize that today's children are growing up in a very different world to
the children for whom she developed her materials. We have therefore
incorporated some materials into our classroom that were not available during
her time, such as computers. A progressive approach is essential, to ensure
that the children develop the computing skills that will likely be required to
further their studies and secure a place in the work force.
We follow the American Montessori Society's guidelines relating to technology's place in the classroom and the appropriateness of the software and Internet programs used. Computer programs are offered to children who are ready for them in the "Montessori way"--they receive a short introduction and are then allowed to work with the material in a variety of ways towards goals at least partially of their own choosing. Computer work is freely chosen by individuals or small groups, like other classroom activities.
